The boys initial impressions of San Francisco have been coloured by:
1. An abundance of woosy small dogs, most wearing coats or clothing of some description and having some sort of style on their fur coats. We even went into a pet shop today (called 'Yap') where you could by strollers, hats and tuxedos for your dog! These muts and their owners have some serious issues!
2. Hanging onto the trolley running boards for dear life as you roll up and down the hills of the city. The brakemen are often characters - some playing gangster music on their warning bells.
3. Lots of hobos asking for spare change and eating out of bins. Not very nice.
4. Our first glimpse of Alcatraz - although it was too foggy and misty to see the Golden Gate bridge.
5. Pink moustaches on some cars, which we first thought were some sort of gay pride symbol but which Mum later clarified as being a form of informal taxi service. If the car is sporting a pink mo, you can flag it and go!
We're off to the Golden Gate Park tomorrow on some push bikes. We followed a friends recommendation and are staying at The Marines Memorial Club and Hotel. It's really well appointed and close to Union Square and downtown. more to follow from this great city - stay tuned.
PS. Thanks for the tip Hosko - we had an afternoon drink at The Grove, Fillmore Street this afternoon. Funky little place.
Spoilt mutts! Not tough like Benson and Bobo!
ReplyDeleteIf you're going to San Francisco................
ReplyDeleteFergus and Dougal, if you have time could you find out what you can for me about Emperor Norton? The USA has had lots of presidents, but only one emperor - and he lived in San Francisco.Emperor Norton (I think) patronised the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco (in Union Square - near where you're staying) - and I think there's a plaque on a wall there acknowledging his patronage. If you're passing the St Francis Hotel maybe the concierge would let you take a photo of the plaque if it still exists. Emperor Norton must have been some guy!!!!I believe that back in the 1850's he commanded his subjects to build a bridge across the bay from San Francisco to Oakland - and they all said he was crazy!
Keep on enjoying the good times
Love from Pa
Hi Pa,
DeleteDad and I went to the St Francis Hotel this afternoon. No-one there knew anything about an Emperor Norton. We got some pretty blank stares from the concierge when we asked about him. We read a lot of the panels showing the history of the Hotel - they mentioned Obama, Eisenhower and Kennedy, but nothing about Emperor Norton. Dad took a photo of me next to the Hotel sign which we've added above.
Love,
Doogs
Hi Granny and Pa,
ReplyDeleteThe comments worked! The mutts over here are definitely spoiled. One was named 'Otis', although he just kept walking past another smaller dog who was yapping at him. His owner commented 'Otis knows better'. We'll have a look into the Emperor Norton issue today and let you know Pa.
Love,
Ferg and Doogs.
Pa and I stayed at the St Francis Hotel way back in 1977! It was a lovely hotel in those days. Is it still smart?
DeleteThanks for checking out the "Emperor"! Pa often knows about odd characters.....he thought you boys would like to hear about him as he was rather an oddball!
Love
Granny. xxxx
The St Francis is still a very snazzy hotel. Right on Union Square and a 3 foot high macaroon cake in the foyer! Fi googled a blurb about the 'self proclaimed' Emperor Norton. He did sound like quite a character - although most of the people we have come across in San Francisco seem pretty unique! The type that would go to Jethro Tull concerts!
ReplyDeleteOff to Alcatraz tomorrow after a walk up Lombard street today!
Pa went to a Jethro Tull concert once - there were plenty of greying pony tailed gents there so Fi's friend from Speight St could well have been a JT fan
DeleteDon't leave Fergus and Dougal behind on Alcatraz!!!
