Weird Conversations #2

We stopped at the small town of  Lee Vining, just before the Tioga Pass (the highest pass in the Sierra Nevada and the gateway to Yosemite National Park).  There was an elderly couple (about 65) from Arkansas who were travelling on a Honda Golden Wing trike with a small trailer on the back.  Fi (F) stuck up a conversation with the couple from Arkansas (A) after admiring their bike:

F: “Where are you off to on this machine?”.

A: “We’re headin’ North to see some o’ them big ol’ red wood trees.  Ah read about ‘em when Ah was younger but this is our first time to California.  Ah hear them trees is so big, the highway goes straight through the trunk o’ one of ‘em”.

F: “Yes, we’ve read about the sequoia trees as well – they certainly sound impressive”.

A: “Y’all should head up North and see some of em for y’selves…whoops…Ah just figured, y’all prob’ly don’t know what Ah mean when Ah say “Y’all”. When Ah say, “Y’all”, AH MEAN YOU!!”

F: (feigning great surprise at this revelation) “OK – thanks for explaining that”.

I have to say, though, these guys looked pretty happy and content as they enjoyed their retirement riding around the US.  I could imagine Granny and Pa, Nanny and Poppy in their leathers doing a lap around Australia on their trikes as well!

We’re on our way to San Francisco now.  Posts from Yosemite to follow soon!

  2. Thanks Lucy. We are having a wonderful time. We hand back the RV tomorrow in San Francisco and have a few days there (until 1 June) before heading up to Chicago. It's the Memorial Day weekend in the US (Memorial Day Sunday) which marks the start of the holiday season so things are likely to be a bit more crowded from now on.
    Will keep you posted.
